This is based on a true story that I knew the investigators working on it and other similar cases. Some use what is mentioned in that link. Others use implants for hearing and vision, or specialty contact lenses, etc.
The boy's father was in the military and entered the mother and son in a study on augmented reality. They took a lump sum payment after first doing an infant development study and the other new study came up. It mimics schizophrenia but a variety of medical tests show it is not consistent with what goes on in real schizophrenia. The boy's mom at one point tries to explain she's a communications officer hearing things from all over and that there is a problem. The problem people catch it, change what she seems to say and the boy kills her.
A similar program to the one in this link that simulates schizophrenia was used on the boy. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/601336/disability-simulating-vr-promotes-empathy/
Wow, this is terrible, and I am usually a fan of "B movies" and ones with bleak humour. I turned this off maybe around the halfway point, as I stopped caring about the plot or any of the characters.
Dull and not funny. Constantly Flip Flops between wanna-be humor and wanna-be drama and never decides which it wants to be. If you still decide to watch and find yourself with this query "am I getting it", save your evening, stop it and realize that it's the film-makers themselves who didn't get what they wanted to make.
This movie is rated R for a good reason. It may start out rather light but its gets dark fast. I started watching this movie not knowing what I was getting into; it has Ryan Reynolds so it must be funny right?! I spent a good portion of the movie wondering what exactly I had gotten myself into but I couldn't justify turning it off because I had to know how it ends. If you decide to give this movie a go be prepared to ask yourself numerous times "what am I watching?". I wouldn't recommend this particular film for your next family movie night, I'd say its more of a wait til the kids are at a sleepover and in no danger of walking into a room just to see severed heads in refrigerators type of movie.
This is a campy movie that you have to watch when you are in the mood for a campy movie.
Though there is nothing funny about schizophrenia, this film employed dark, often gruesome, comedy, in exploring the delusional impulses that make a tiny minority of mentally-ill people do horrendous things. while (wilfully) not taking their meds. I doubt psychiatrists would appreciate the portrayal of the less-than-perceptive member of their profession in the film much. but I enjoyed the movie(and the whacky musical number at the very end).
If you're a fan of Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool, this is for you. Cooky and creepy!
Progressively grim portrayal of a young man with a serious psychiatric disorder and delusions. Realistic depiction of insanity is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and as awful.
A young man with a mental issue stopped talking his medication, and began talking to his two pets and hallucinating. Eventually the downward spiral let to murders, which is his mind were done out of compassion. Pretty good performance by the three lead actors. Worth a look.
This movie is billed as a dark comedy (my favorite genre), but it's not. It's certainly uncomfortable, but it's not funny at all. In fact, it sort of feels like they're making fun of mental illness in a bullying, stereotypical way. Maybe it's a dark comedy for people who don't know mental illness personally? I was left with sadness in the pit of my stomach - not at all what I'd set out to feel in watching a movie.
Ha! What a terrific movie! The naysayers below just didn't get it! It's weird, it's dark, it's quirky, it's not for everybody, but it's good if mainstream movies bore you. And I'm definitely going back on my meds after watching this!
Pleasantly surprised. Thought Ryan Reynolds did a great job. It is definitely a black comedy. Yeah most people will not like it because the film sort of expects you to see things from a killer's point of view and nobody likes feeling for the bad guy. As far as kids go, yeah, this isn't for kids. Don't let your kids watch it. As far as experimenting with comedy, why not. Why does every film these days have to fit into a nice little consumer ready package. Why do our expectations always have to be met. I have seen so many films in my life at this point I am looking to be surprised. Honestly I think there is plenty of room in the market for weird off movies like this. They should make more.
This video was advertised as a dark comedy about a serial killer and had received good reviews online at Rotten Tomatoes (73%) and IMDB (6.3),
It is dark but not a comedy, it is just bad. If you do watch this video DO NOT let your teens watch it and to make better sense of what you have just watched be sure to watch the deleted and extended scenes. But my recommendation is not to waste your time!!!!
It had its moments, but as a whole it was an uncomfortable movie. The comedy (mainly the cat's and the dog's personalities) was great, but the attempt to blend that with disturbing serial killing was just bizarre. If you're going to make a comedy, do it, don't experiment with it. Ryan Reynolds' voices and his performance definitely depicted his talent, however.
Bummer, watched less than 20 minutes. Only thing interesting was the pink coveralls and packaging.
This is the perfect kind of character for Ryan Reynolds to play. Creepy killer. Awesomely funny yet some-what moving story. Definitely a favourite. Note he does the voices for the two pets himself.
What a waste of time to watch this movie. Not a comedy at all just a morbid, dark, pathetic story.
Why Ryan why? Was hoping for a comedy. Nope. Weird stuff, sad at times too.
Horror or comedy, with a mix of schizophrenia. Dark wackiness- I didn't see the value anywhere in this film. I don't think I could ever sit through it again if I even slept- my time is more valuable- be warned. Not the kind of movie for me- even with a decent cast.
Disturbing juxtaposition between grave, decomposing reality and Jerry’s mentally ill happy world he is able to live in while not taking his pills. Superb acting by Ryan Reynolds and beautiful cinematography. The plot was a complete waste of 103 minutes of my life. One thing is for certain, I will never ever own a cat!
A morbid dark comedy if there is such a thing. A tenable psycho thriller when a likable mentally sick man decided to get off his meds. It is a super mental case.
