Based on the Christmas Truce of 1914 (in which warring factions of French, British, and German troops laid down their arms to observe a momentary peace in honor of the holiday), this multilingual movie isn't warm and fuzzy so much as an inspiring and thought-provoking reflection of our shared hum... Deeply moving true story. For anyone who's tired of frivolous holiday movies, find a comfortable chair and be mesmerized. Suitable watching any time of the year.

This is definitively a touching, moving film with great performance actors. Bring you to the reality of war , human beings unity and deep feelings of togetherness in time of hardship , trouble and war.

Although based on historical facts it quickly becomes quite clear that writer/director Christian Carion has taken some dramatic liberties with his story as a temporary truce becomes a mini peace summit. Be that as it may this is still a well crafted movie, beautifully filmed and buoyed by some amazing performances from its international cast. Yes, anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of history can explain why WWI was justified; but by reducing warfare to its essential human components Carion highlights how tragic and ludicrous it truly is.

The bonus disc is interesting. You cannot miss Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazón.

Amazing story! Loved it!

Very well done- a thoughtful look at the temporary armistice French, German, and English soldiers established on Christmas Day during the first few years of World War 1.

This a very good movie, shows how stupid war is. I had known that this had taken place but I was unaware of the consequences that the soldiers received from it. This is not much of a war movie, so if you don’t like war movies you may enjoy this one.

This is a 2005 116-minute drama written and directed by Christian Carion, based on a true-life story of thr spontaneous Christmas Eve truce
declared by Scottish, French and German troops in the trenches of World War I.
A few days before Christmas, the Scots and French troops lead a combined assault on the German trenches in France.
The attack causes heavy casualties on both sides, but does not break the stalemate of trench warfare.
One of the Scottish brothers, William, is mortally wounded during the attack, and his brother Jonathan is forced to abandon him in no-man's-land
as they retreat.
In Germany, Anna Sørensen manages to get permission to perform for Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, and Sprink (Anna's lover) is allowed to accompany her.
Two are famous opera stars.
They spend a night together and then perform.
Afterward, Sprink expresses bitterness at the comfort of the generals at their headquarters, and resolves to go back to the front to sing for the troops.
Sprink is initially against Anna's decision to go with him, but he agrees shortly afterward.

The unofficial truce begins when the Scots begin to sing festive songs and songs from home, accompanied by bagpipes.
Sprink and Sørensen arrive in the German front-line and Sprink sings for his comrades.
As Sprink sings Silent Night he is accompanied by a piper in the Scottish front-line.
Sprink responds to the piper and exits his trench with a small Christmas tree singing "Adeste Fideles."
Following Sprink's lead the French, German, and Scottish officers meet in no-man's-land and agree on a cease-fire for the evening.
The various soldiers meet and wish each other "Joyeux Noël","Frohe Weihnachten", and "Merry Christmas."
They exchange chocolate, champagne, and photographs of loved ones.
I've heard and read of this spontaneous Christmas Eve truce, but I really wonder if the woman was actually allowed to go to the front.
It is unthinkable!
Is it a fiction the director-writer added to this drama?

Unforgettable movie - full of passion and untold miracles during the war

This film is very well written and acted. It certainly makes one wonder how the soldiers went on to resume their battle after forming friendships on Christmas Day.
