Really liked, suspenseful and believable, much better than the US series,

This was a disappointment. LaPlant is an excellent, engaging writer who often captures class, gender, and race burdens somewhat effectively, all while writing cracking dialogue for believable yet flawed characters in challenging stories.
None of that is here. The male lead is a parody of the hard-bitten, tough-talking cop with a heart of gold. He comes across liked a loud-talking, spindle-shanked pocket Popeye. The female lead isn't much better--her job is to be the reactor, the follower, with no spark nor leadership nor sharp smarts.
There is one gift: LaPlante absolutely savages the QCs in their powdered wigs and their shallow, money-grubbing, and heartless ways. That is a true treat. Their inclusion also shows how much good policework (well, sometimes) is lost in the laziness of the attorney's minds.

British crime drama series 1997-2009 chock full of actors, many early in their careers. Interesting to see their development: David Hayman about 47 recently as Jonas in The Paradise; Iain Glen about 35 recently in Breathless & Game of Thrones. The first disk of this first set is badly damaged with scratches. The second set is intense & a bit too graphic for me & shows the talent of Iain Glen as a devilish character. Linda La Plante writes multiple Brit dramas. This series is often overly long/dramatic in great detail of crime & story line. I'll skip to the last of series for comparison. Not for the squeamish.

Agreed. Love affair between leads is flat and boring - no sparks. The stories are good and run roughly an hour and 40 minutes which gives great character and story development. The Silver Tongued Devil episode on disc 2 was gruesome but great.

I've been a fan of Lynda La Plant for many years. Versatile in books ay TV crime drama. Quite edgy, not the idealized (mostly white, rich) UK of Poirot or Morse. La Plant also wrote the Prime Suspect series.

A lot of yelling but the dialogue doesnt ring true. he smokes and drinks a lot - a bit cliche but not terrible. a minor chacter - Satch - is the best actor in the ensemble. love affair between male and female lead - no chemistry.
