"Moon has spent his life hiding what he is--a shape-shifter able to transform himself into a winged creature of flight. An orphan with only vague memories of his own kind, Moon tries to fit in among the tribes of his river valley, with mixed success. Just as Moon's true nature is once again discovered and he is cast out by his adopted tribe, he encounters a shape-shifter like himself... someone who seems to know exactly what Moon is, who promises that Moon will be welcomed into his community. What this stranger doesn't tell Moon is that his presence will tip the balance of power... that his extraordinary lineage is crucial to the colony's survival... and that his people face extinction at the hands of the dreaded Fell. Moon must overcome a lifetime of conditioning in order to save himself... and his newfound kin."--P. [4] of cover.

Raksura series, bk. 1. Excellent world-building fantasy story. Fast-paced adventure. Martha Wells is the author of the very popular Murderbot series (Science Fiction) and fans may want to try some of her earlier writing.

Excellent tale, well told, with fascinating world building. Totally recommend!

It was a little hard to get into at first, just because the world Wells created is so original and so you can't really assume any of the details of what's going on. But once I did get into, I really loved it. Wells is a good writer with an impressive imagination.

Wonderful book, and rarely predictable. A bit Ugly Duckling, a bit Firefly-like, but set on a single planet with multiple races and beings. Try the first ten pages and bet you'll be hooked.
