There are many things that set this movie apart from other Yakuza films, or for that matter, gangster films in general. This movie, and its companion, Beyond Outrage, more than any other Yakuza film, forces you to look at the utter brutality of the gangster lifestyle. This movie is graced with good acting, believable characters, smart script, and spacious, beautiful camera shots. There is a gritty, unvarnished atmosphere to this film which gives its depiction of the “Way of the Yakuza,” its subtitle, an air of authenticity.

HARDCORE GANGSTER STUFF RIGHT HERE PERIOD.I think this is just part 1 of what seems to be an unexpected trilogy maybe because i just saw the sequel to this foreign THUG classic and it is nearly flawless ladies and gentlemen. If you're jealous, just request for your local library to get it right now.Takeshi Kitano directed the bone chilling sequel as well as this 1st one,and he is one of the GREATEST ACTION/ADVENTURE DIRECTORS OF ALL TIME PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Yeah !!! Kitano the legend turns the knob on the Japanese Ultra-violence genre to 11 with his latest flic. Fans of crime or gangster films should not miss this one. Ridiculously good, with whiplash-inducing humour undercutting the gouts of blood. A breakneck ride to the finish, ''Beat" has fashioned all sorts of interesting new ways for Yakuza to waste each-other. I'm a Vegan but I love this stuff, so if you are too tender-hearted for fiction that lets off steam in this manner - please go cry elsewhere. This one's a bloody high-water mark!

This was a good foreign gangster flick. Very old school. No good guys here. the violence is done well and really gets intense toward the end of the film. Subtitled. The plot takes some unexpected twists and ends well. Graphic but engaging.

If you don't mind gore [Yakusa style] you are in for a blood - curdling - butcher shop of slaughter. The story is brilliantly told by the great Japanese director & actor, Takeshi Kitano.

very good

The plot is about the ruthless and cutthroat actions within one Yakuza syndicate. The boss was pitting his lieutenants against each other to stamp out ambitious upstarts, except one old timer decided that enough was enough:

Movie probably had aspiration to be the Japanese "Godfather". It came up quite short. The script is just confusing. The dialogue has 2 modes - total subservience, Japanese style, or gruff yelling to dominate the conversation. Nothing classy or subtly menacing about it. Skip this; re-rent the Godfather instead.

The movie was about the internal strife of Yakuza member but it was not explained what caused the strife. It had lots of violence, especially finger cutting.

Beat Takeshi knows his way around a Yakuza film. Full of manipulation, double crosses , and violence set against the Japanese background of formal mobsters. You might even call this a Yakuza 'Godfather', though not quite that good.
