A fascinating biography of the great artist and engineer, Leonardo Da Vinci, focused on his notebooks. Leonardo was interested in practically everything. He had very little formal education and never learned basic mathematics. (For instance, he could never do long division, struggling with it all his life.) But he had a teacher, the great Andrea del Verrochio, who was also a painter, metallurgist, engineer, architect, etc. Verrochio encouraged his students to explore everything and be interested in everything.

This is shorter than Walter Isaacson’s more recent biography of Leonardo, but it is also well-written. The concentration in this book is more on Leonardo’s scientific discoveries, with some discussion on how those affected his artwork.
