This is pretty much e bible of knitting. Non-serious knitters will not appreciate this weighty tome, as the previous commenter seems to have discovered. A running joke is that it helps us knitters develop biceps from carrying the thing around.

It is, however, a WONDERFUL resource for someone who truly wants to expand their knitting skills. Looking up a technique will provide you with what is most probably every way of possibly doing the thing you are trying to do. This does require a basic understanding of knitting already.

It could be used by a beginner learning to knit, it just provides a lot of extra info that is not necessary and could be overwhelming when you're just starting out.

More like a theoretical book about the idea of knitting and how that might ....

I am game for long and dry and dusty, but this book is very much a passing update of an old and dry and dusty out of print book. It will not teach you to knit. It will not improve your skills if you are already knitting. I question the use of the word 'popular' in the details note. Unclear and a trifle...... overlong. About two inches thick.
