It is not just the living who are prey to 1780s London's criminals and cutpurses. Corpses, too, are fair game -- dug up from fresh graves and sold to men of science for dissection. Dr. Thomas Silkstone's unscrupulous rival, Dr. John Hunter, has learned of the imminent death of eight-foot-tall Charles Byrne, known as the "Irish Giant," and is obsessed with obtaining the body for his research. When Dr. Hunter is implicated in the horrific murder of a young castrato, Thomas must determine how far the increasingly erratic surgeon will go in the name of knowledge. For as Thomas knows, the blackest hearts sometimes go undetected until it's too late.

I'm enjoying the character of Dr Thomas Silkstone. This 2nd book is well written and researched, based on the life on Charles Byrne, the Irish Giant. It also contains characters and references to other historical people and places . A bit gruesome at times, it gives an account of beliefs and practices at the time.
The only thing I find lacking, is the character of Lydia, Thomas' lady love. I find her personality weak, although a bit better developed than in the first book, and I wonder what a talented man like Thomas sees in this "fragile" beauty. She has had a difficult life, but doesn't seem to be a strong character or a match to the intelligent Thomas. I hope the author develops her more over time.

Don't read this over dinner...some of the anatomical details are pretty grisly!
