David Golder thinks that money can buy everything; he does not want to help his associate who takes his own life. His wife and his daughter live in luxury and would not imagine it any other way. The daughter displays no love, no tenderness, no human emotion at all. Later when she comes back to her desperate father, she will have the same behavior.

David Golder, a poor immigrant from Poland, has spent all his life to become one of the richest men in the world. The tragedy of it all is that great wealth is not all there is. While away on business deals, his wife messes with another man and what he thinks is his daughter cannot live without riches. This was Duvivier’s first talkie and it is a good film. Harry Baur, the main actor, did not know it at the time, would also see true tragedy in his life as the fascists were on the horizon and they would not treat his Jewish wife kindly.
