"England, 1921. Three years after her husband, Alex, disappeared, shot down over Germany, Jo Manders still mourns his loss. Working as a paid companion to Alex's wealthy, condescending aunt, Dottie Forsyth, Jo travels to the family's estate in the Sussex countryside. But there is much she never knew about her husband's origins...and the revelation of a mysterious death in the Forsyths' past is just the beginning... All is not well at Wych Elm House. Dottie's husband is distant, and her son was grievously injured in the war. Footsteps follow Jo down empty halls, and items in her bedroom are eerily rearranged. The locals say the family is cursed, and that a ghost in the woods has never rested. And when Jo discovers her husband's darkest secrets, she wonders if she ever really knew him. Isolated in a place of deception and grief, she must find the truth or lose herself forever. And then a familiar stranger arrives at Wych Elm House... "-- Provided by publisher.

I found this book to be really intriguing. It deals a little bit with ghosts but it is not spooky. The story takes place after WW1 and is about the widow of a soldier. She becomes a companion for a member of her husbands family and becomes entangled in family secrets. If you're looking for something a little bit different, I would recommend this book.

Would have been enjoyable even without the supernatural angle (which in a way is a little too much.) Jo is an intelligent heroine -- one who doesn't keep things to herself and then later live to regret it. Characters are for the most part well fleshed out and stay true to their nature.

When I ordered this book, I thought I was ordering a romance. Then, as I read through it awhile, I assumed it was a mystery. Truth be known, I don't know how you would classify this book, except "far-fetched".
I did not enjoy it.

Just delightful. A bit spooky, with a ghost, but not haunting.
The truth will out! A bit mystery, a bit spy novel, and just a good plain story. More and more I appreciate these stories from between the wars, including the glorious 1920's and difficult 1930's.
