Revenge is a dish best served cold. But, even when it’s ladled out to the deserving, it can leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

All right, so much for the food metaphors. A sheikh with revenge on his mind gets more than he bargains for when innocent people get caught in his machinations. Foreign cultures about honor, family and child rearing clash and complicate this story about vengeance over a perceived slight to a woman’s virtue.

The sheikh is suitably smoking and handsome. But he’s also damaged and, as with a lot of abused children, he grows up to spread the wealth to others. I felt that Rafe’s emotional and physical hurt didn’t get enough play in this book; child abuse is a difficult and complex issue and the notion that a good woman’s “love” is enough to cure him is a notion that I can’t accept as a credible part of the plot. (It actually read more like one of those sob stories men trot out to make women sympathetic to them.) It’s a problem that would need a much longer novel (or a sequel) to provide proper justice to that motif.

I also thought that Violet proved to be too malleable about Rafe’s desires. Of course, her early easy acceptance of his return could be put down to pregnant hormones, so they’re not too objectionable. But everyone else’s willingness to fall in line with Rafe’s plottings makes his so-called “victory” too easy and thus unbelievable. Shouldn’t at least one person have held out, even when he waved tons of money in their faces? Apparently not.

The main focus of this novel is on Rafe, Violet and Mac with short shrift being given to other characters. So this novel comes off as being a little on the thin side without the revenge plot driving it.
