I enjoyed Barry's exuberance, humour and attention to shoes and clothes! However, he was not able to sustain his tale especially as it was thin on plot. The book was too long and at times seemed like a comic book.

Author has quite an imagination, I've never seen so many variants of the "f-word," and using "hoor" instead of "whore," absolutely brilliant! It would have been better as a 64-page comic for adolescents. Cardboard characters, no story resolution (meaning the author is going to inflict the publc with a sequel?), give this book a pass. (Reminds me of "Aurororama," another book about a dystopic future where men continue to be violent and women are sex objects, does the world need any more books like this, I think not!)

Kevin Barry knows how to write. In this, his first novel, you can practically hear the Irish accent in his inventive, electrifying prose. Though set in a dystopian Ireland of the near future, gangs vie for turf and men vie for women as they have ever done. Not for the squeamish, perhaps, but there's humor here, too.
