Shock and awe! The perversion of religion is obsene, but when it is done by those who are supposed to provide guidance and leadership it is distubing. The punishment for these bad priests and nun is too light. If the punishment was more deserving for these hideus crimes then this movie would be even better. Gave it a five, very worth watching.

What a story! It is convoluted though. It suggests that all of the priests are guilty of some kind of sexual molestation. Some scenes are too long, like the explicit ranting about the abuse done by one of the priests. The final cruelty of the only female among them is shockingly unexpected.

This film simply did not work.

Unrepentent priests and needless violence against animals. Cannot recommend. bookwoman & Abby Tabby

This is a dark and disturbing look into the Catholic practice of hiding away errant priests and the consequences for everyone involved.

This film is suitable for adults - It contains no sex, but plenty of discussion by priest admitting or denying sexual activities like sex with minors. This film was nominated for best foreign film by the Golden Globes. I would ask the director if the fantasies, desires, activities, etc. claimed or denied by the protagonists are based on real cases. One of the priests in the film had committed his acts so long ago, not only he but also the Catholic Church could remember why he was placed in "The Club" (which is just a name for such sexually screwed up priests that they are kept out of society like lepers). If you decide to watch, brace yourself for a heap of really graphic conversations.

A pitch-dark drama/comedy about the bringers of light. The Club is not only based on fact, but fact uncovered with difficulty from church and government sources. It is not an easy watch, partly because the criminals depicted are very human, and partly because humans who would molest a child, or cover it up, are not good people. All the actors give amazing performances, but I would give the prize to Antonia Zegers, as the priests' servant/keeper/jackal. For those who say "oh, well. This is in the past now", see what the present pope has to say:

A dark, disappointing movie! It was an unique view at the Catholic priests that have transgressed, generally, in the pedophilia! They were now in the special home, far away from their churches and their communities, to atone for their sins! Definitely, a subject that needs to be told!
Yet, the violence, the mood just left me feeling sick. *Spoiler* The fact that these priests and a nun had to take care of a victim, at the end of the film, for many years to come, was a brilliant way to end it! Very Christ-like! Definitely, an Adult movie! A heavy subject! I wish it was not so dark! It's because of that I have reduced the stars! I hope there are more movies made on this subject with the emphasis on the penance and the rehabilitation!

It's always fun to see a director rip the Church a new hole but writer/director Pablo Larrain's caustic satire about the sins of the Fathers coming home to roost is enough to make Buñuel wince. Ouch!

Be forewarned that this is one very disturbing film to stomach long after the credits rolled. The writers and actors never spared unsuspected viewers shelter from naked atrocities, but forced to confront the narrow moral code, all forgiving through sacrament of penance, in the crime and punishment of those black sheep within the Church's own family.

-Sister, we both know why the brothers are here. What I need to know is if they're aware of why they're here.
--This house is not a spa. No. It isn't a retreat either. It's a center for prayer and penance. It's a place of repentance.
-Look. God also created homosexuals. He created them. He's proud of them. Proud of who they are. I am celibate, for example. I'm celibate. Of my own free will, I decided not to have a wife, children.
--So you're celibate because you haven't been with a woman...but you have been with men?
-You are in a privileged place. God is here, Father. Look around you. Nature, the sea.
--God is not here, Father. This is a jail. With fucking criminals!
Forgiveness, oh, God. Forgiveness in your presence. Forgiveness and clemency. Forgiveness and mercy ... Lamb of God. May peace be upon you, Brothers. You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us ... Grant us peace ...

You can just see he's a guilty rich guy. But guilty of what? Besides, if there were no more poor people, there would be no more saints... and that would be a terrible thing. There have always been poor people. They want to change the church. Over 2,000 years old and it's still here
and I like it the way it is. There is only one church of God. Amen.
-Has it ever occurred to you that you're a criminal? What else do you do in this house?
--I count the slices of bologna. I make sure nobody puts too much butter on their bread. I count the tablespoons of sugar. I count the bulbs that burn out. I count the needles so they don't get lost. I keep track of how long they spend in the bathroom. Long showers are forbidden.
-But you are no longer a nun officially.
--So I called an uncle who had some connections... and told him I had to pay for my sins... and needed to do my penance. So he called me, asked me if I liked the sea... and told me I would be a jail keeper.

Sister: Welcome. This house is very important to the church. A shelter, a house of prayer.
We wake up in the morning and pray. Then we have breakfast. Then there's some free time for personal matters. We hold mass at noon. The fathers take turns officiating, the same with confession. If you are in need of confession, just let me know. I will speak with the fathers and one of them will help you. We have lunch at 1:00. After that, we sing. Then we have some free time,
and at 8:30, we have dinner. We say the rosary at 8:00 and have dinner at 8:30. You cannot go into town... unless it's between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. or 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. If you want to go out during those hours, you can, but only alone. You can't be on the streets together. It's absolutely forbidden to communicate with any person outside of this house. Also forbidden is any activity
involving self-flagellation... or self-pleasuring. You are not allowed to handle money or cell phones.
