For generations, warlords fought bitterly for dominance in a land without a king, leaving a fractured, war-torn country plagued by thieves, slavers, and the servants of dark gods and darker magic. Allystaire Coldbourne travels a treacherous path toward his Ordination as a holy knight of legend, a Paladin, a savior of the people. But to fulfill this role, he -- and the unexpected allies he finds along the way -- must face the demonic, sorcerous evil that stalks the land, the wrath of gods and men, and his own dark past.

Top-grade story-telling. Ford is no stylist- this is not Lord Dunsany; this is straight-ahead meat and potatoes fantasy. But there's so much fantasy drek in recent years that merely being published is no longer proof of minimum competence, so just quality story-telling is worth noting.
What is it about? Disillusioned ex-knight/ronin is noticed by a benevolent Goddess who bestows powers on him, and four others, who proceed to Save the Day, and battle off two other gods and their followers (who don't want competition). Second in trilogy is already out, and just as good.
I think a third (due 2018), will be stretching it a bit, but not as much as most others do (trilogies are now automatic!), so i'm only quibbling here.
One sign of fine fantasy writing is nomenclature. Ford neologicizes freezing and cold into curse words, and 'links' as synonyms for money; adding to the realism. While you read his world lives, and that's one of the acid tests of superior fantasy.

Excellent a book that seized my interest from the first pages and kept it till the end. I was torn between eagerness to read more and the desire to slow down and savor the experience. I hope you all read this book and recommend the Library getting the rest of the Trilogy when available.
