Maguire has always been bad luck, and she hates it. She blames herself for the injuries and even deaths she thinks she caused just by being alive. So, she finds it best to just stay far away from others so she doesn’t hurt them. In therapy, Maguire meets a famous tennis star named Jordy. At first, Jordy just needed her for his “shrink homework”, but they later on developed a friendship and maybe even more. Maguire really wants it to be more, but she knows that by being around him, she’s going to hurt another loved one and this time, she’s not going to let that happen. This novel had such a creative concept which was the girl with horrible luck. I’ve never read or seen something like that before, so it was really cool to read about it. Jordy and Maguire are both very charming individuals and the novel is well paced. Girl Against the Universe did a really great job with the plot, characters, and ending. Rating:5/5

A sweet and special book. I absolutely loved Maguire. I struggle with endearing myself to female leads, but Maguire won me over quickly and never lost me. She was the epitome of strength and vulnerability. As she opened herself up to new relationships, she held her own with friendly banter and honesty. Jordy was a great love interest for Maguire. Rather than only being a tower of strength for Maguire to lean on, he also came with his own set of issues to work through. The lack of using miscommunication for story conflict was refreshing. It can be tiresome for a reader when all the H/h need to do is COMMUNICATE! I also like how the author handled Maguire's loss and current family dynamics. Although the book takes place long after her mom is remarried, the relationship growth with her stepfather is beautifully written. Those moments with her stepfather, Tom, are the most emotional to me. Overall, a wonderfully written book chronicling the struggles with guilt, overwhelming fears and moving on after a significant personal loss.

This book was not only cute, but it gave me a new perspective to look at people with. Even if it looks like you have it all.
