The Tardis arrives on a extinct volcanic island. Before long, the travelers are captured and taken into the depths of the Earth, where they find a hidden civilization, the lost city of Atlantis. The Atlanteans worship a goddess named Amdo and use Fish People, men and women operated upon so that they can breathe under the sea, to farm the plankton-based food on which they survive.

The film for the first and last episodes in this series were lost. The soundtrack is there but they have to use still pictures to illustrate. It is unfortunate because there is a lot of cool sets and costumes in this story line. They must have spend a lot of money on this. And in the last episode, they flood one of the sets with water. Would have been cool to see.

I like the second doctor better in this story line than his first two story lines where he plays the fool and plays his flute way too often. He is more serious here and acts more like a modern day doctor.

The story is pretty good for Doctor Who. It is about the lost city of Atlantis which is found underwater but still functioning.

Unfortunately, there was not sufficient hindsight in early television to realize that Doctor Who might just keep going for 55+ years, or that fans would still like to see the earlier shows. Some episodes had the tapes reused and therefore were lost. In some cases, like this one, some parts were lost. The first and fourth segments are missing.

The Extras may be better than what is left of the episode. It really isn't very good. It is still an interesting part of history. Looks like they just about ended up with four companions. Polly and Ben had just been joined by Jamie and a character on this episode, Ara, looked like another potential addition.
