It's been quite a while since I've seen a vintage Hollywood film that featured a character who was such a despicable slime-ball as was grifter/gambler, Joe Adams in 1943's "Mr. Lucky".

And the fact that Joe Adams was presented here as being the "darling" of the story made him even more repulsive than ever to me.

And, wouldn't it just figger that it would be actor, Cary Grant (as Joe Adams) who tried so desperately to win the audience over (even though Grant's portrayal of this ultimate scum-bag only made matters worse rather than better).

Anyway - Chalk up yet another certified dud from Hollywood's "Golden Age" where I'm seriously beginning to think that those apparent golden years are just an illusion viewed from the perspective of those who refuse to remove those rose-coloured glasses.

Cary Grant plays a rather ruthless criminal that is trying to avoid the draft in WWII. He exhibits zero interest in patriotism and basically is interested in growing his criminal enterprise. He meets a woman who he believes he can trick into helping him in his pursuit of much needed money. Jeez, I don't know of any American presidents that act this way, or do I?

I think I smell a Spruce Goose somewhere, 1943 is the same year Howard Hughes got the Hercules hk1 contract. WEIRD!

Cute noir-romantic comedy. Cary Grant, at his charming best, is irresistible. Interesting love story mixed with drama that climaxes with Hollywood boy meets girl and girl loses boy plot.

This a lovely romantic comedy farce. Cary Grant is at his best, and Lorraine Day is at her loveliest. This movie tells the story of a romance between a shady gambler and a wealthy socialite in the early days of World War II. Grant and Day look good and play well together. As the story plays out, you do feel the building romance developing between the two. Of their movies, this is one of my favorites.

I suggested the library purchase this DVD because I had never seen this movie. Sorry, it's a dud--no pace, can't decide whether it's a comedy or drama. Most disappointing is how bad Cary Grant is--he overacts throughout, and establishes no real character.
