"An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a machine that could change the world. Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real. In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true -- Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld. Matthias is on the trail of a groundbreaking prototype cipher machine. He suspects that Pickwell stole the device and planned to sell it. But now Pickwell is dead and the machine has vanished. When Matthiass investigation leads him to Amalies front door, the attraction between them is intense, but she knows it is also dangerous. Amalie and Matthias must decide if they can trust each other and the passion that binds them, because time is running out."--Front flap.

Here we go again. Did Krentz actually write this book, or does she write an outline and someone else "fleshes" it out. It's confusing when the plot goes from a circus trapeze artist escaping death to her owning an inn where a guest is murdered. So many characters are introduced in the first few chapters it's difficult to remember who they are and their connection to the plot. I'm glad I checked this book out as opposed to buying it!

I love all Krentz' stories but prefer she go back further in time or do a "new world" one as Jayne Castle. But I'll read anything by Jayne Ann Krentz, and this is far superior to the previous 2 "Amanda Quick" novels. It took me about 7 hours - and was generally worth the time.

Absolutely gorgeous cover. The story, like the previous one set in Burning Cove reminded me of a dime novel of the previous century. No character growth, no humor, and no real sensuality. Will still keep reading this author, but was disappointed by this sequence so far.

She did it again. Checked it out yesterday afternoon, finished it this morning. Brought another Jones family member in. If you are familiar with her work you know the family I am talking about. Can't wait for the next one.

As always, Ms Krentz delivers a light satisfying read, perfect for a weekend of showers and drizzle.
