Just rewatched this for the millionth time and I still love it. The fish tank scene! The pool scene! Mercutio! For something that takes place in 1990s California, this movie gets everything about Romeo and Juliet right (even more so than the Zeffirelli version, I’d argue). The thing about the Montague boys in the play is that they’re hot-headed idiots who overreact to everything, and Luhrmann’s frenetic use of editing, colours, and music illustrates this perfectly. Claire Danes is an appropriately innocent and naïve Juliet, and Leo DiCaprio is a perfectly impulsive and foolish Romeo (and yeah, I still have a massive crush on him). The soundtrack is also amazing, definitely one of my favourite movie soundtracks ever.
