This is a dark and tense survival story. A family lives along an isolated cove off the coast of Newfoundland, largely shut off from the outside world. When 10 and 12-year old Ava and Evered’s parents die in quick succession, they find themselves facing the harsh realities of life alone, in near total isolation. Crummey’s exquisite depictions of life and nature are close to cinematic, and his characters are vividly drawn and sympathetic. An uneasy, gripping, at times uncomfortable novel which explores human nature in depth.

Imagine Jurassic Park written by Barry Crump and you might be somewhere close to this marvelous New Zealand adventure series. A group of scientists escorted by an elite force from the NZDF descends into the wilderness of Te Uruwera, where there’ve been strange happenings of late, and rumours of a beast on the hunt. The word "taniwha" is being used... It's going to take Taine McKenna all his survival skills and a good dose of traditional Māori knowledge to keep this group safe, or at least some of them - the death toll is mounting and it's very primal and very gory. Great new adventure fiction from Aotearoa, follow up with 'Into the Sounds'.

The Road has become a contemporary classic of post-apocalyptic fiction, in which a father and son traverse on foot through a blasted America; a freezing wasteland suffused with ash and roaming bands of violent marauders and cannibals. The pair are headed for the coast, without knowing what may await them. A harrowing story, yet throughout runs a thread of hope in the dark and the sustaining power of love, all told in Cormac McCarthy's spare, powerful prose.
